Our Flight for Freedom: Thurow to Helmstedt

We left Thurow for Berlin, via Anklam, on an improvised permit I obtained from Stark, on the pretense of travelling to Rostock for agricultural training. In Berlin, we remained a few days with family. We continued our journey until we got to Eilsleben, where the train terminated and we tried unsuccessfully to board a Red Cross train filled with refugees. Riding instead under the Russian and Polish guard, our sense of terror justifiably reached new proportions at Marienborn, where we were sandwiched into a small signal hut.

From there, we finally found opportunity to escape on foot, hands and knees, through brambles and mud, eventually making our way by night to Helmstedt and freedom.
